US Marine arrested for raping 14-year-old schoolgirl

Marine arrested

This article really disappointed me, a 38-year-old U.S. marine accused of raping a 14-year-old girl. Both of them should have used better judgment, he shouldn’t have offered to take her home (especially since he tried to take her to his house instead of hers), and she shouldn’t have accepted the offer. The incident is still alleged, and the details are kind of strange leading up to the incident, but it doesn’t look very good for the accused. I thought maybe there was a chance that the girl was lying, and I expected the marine to completely deny touching her at all. Instead, he admits to pushing the girl down and kissing her but denies actually raping her. Why should I believe that he didn’t rape her now that he already admitted to doing something that is still horrible? Things like this happen no matter who is accused of doing it, but it is disappointing that a U.S. marine is the one accused this time. Situations like these can’t help much to strengthen the world’s views on Americans. A similar incident occurred in 1995 where three Americans were accused of rape and each served prison terms of six to seven years. It will be interesting to see what happens to the accused marine in this situation.

U.S. Marine accused of rape

I would have to agree that I found this article very disappointing. After realizing that the alleged rape took place in another country I found it to be even more so. This man is supposed to be representing our country. And if he hasn’t realized, we aren’t doing too well with some parts of the world. Yet we should at least be stand up citizens in the places that are military is located. I find any case like this frustrating to hear about though. It is usually just based all on hear say, hard to prove.

This really helps portray a bad outlook for Americans yet again. Someone that is to be representing his country and his people should be the last to be found in any situation like this. It is truly sad when people that everyone is taught to trust and respect deserve neither for such acts.

I really agree with you. Instead of representing his own country in an honorable manner, he is projecting the total opposite approach by performing such a disgraceful behavior. I think he deserves even more then seven years in prison. It is a shame to see that the people who expect them to protect us are causing more harm and insecurity for us then anybody else. I am interested to know what the sentence will be too. I hope they give him the longest time in prison.

Re: US Marine Accused of Rape

Hearing stories like this really upset me also if they do end up being charged with the crime. If he has admitted to pushing the girl down and kissing her, I find it hard to believe that he would not admit to doing other things if he actually did. I mean I realize that the punishment is going to be a lot stiffer for rape than it would be for a push and a kiss, but I still say you are innocent until proven guilty. I do not agree with any adult putting their hands on any child inappropiately and if he did then he will pay the consequences.

Very disappointing! We should trust those people, since they are the ones who defend America, they should be trustworthy! But this is just shocking. Even though I think it is wrong for anyone to accept offers like that from strangers, however, the girl should have felt safe riding with someone that defend the country, instead of being raped. I believe whatever she says, because it happened before, plus the guy admitted that he kissed her and stuff. I wish he gets prison time, because he deserves it. He probably did not just hurt her physically but also the girl would have that imagine in her head till the rest of her life.

Update

Post  Andrew Abeare on Sat Mar 08, 2008 3:55 pm

I didn't realize Mainichi's article had expired so I thought I should update the situation. The marine was released from custody when the girl didn't want to continue with the charges. She didn't deny the charges, only dropped them, so the military can still punish him if they want to.
